"HD DVD" is a generic term to specify new generation DVD formats developed by the DVD Forum.
"HD DVD" technology provides:

"High Density" DVD discs using blue-laser technology and having the recording layer around 0.6 mm from the read surface, such as:
HD DVD-ROM, HD DVD-R, HD DVD-R for DL, HD DVD-RW, HD DVD-RW for DL

"High Definition" DVD applications using state-of-the-art coding technologies and interactive features, such as:
HD DVD-Video, HD DVD-VR
